All aboard! It’s been a long time coming, but this year, passenger train service in Biloxi is expected to make a comeback.
What we know
When it comes to passenger train service in Biloxi making its return, we don’t know much. What we do know is that an agreement has been reached by Amtrak, freight operators and the Alabama State Port Authority.
To summarize, all parties agreed to have freight and passenger trains share the tracks.
For now, the route will run down the Gulf Coast corridor from Mobile to New Orleans, with four stops in Mississippi along the way. Those stops include Bay St. Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi and Pascagoula.
According to reports, Amtrak confirmed the temporary platform stations in Mississippi are nearing completion. The Biloxi stop will be located next to the Biloxi Transit Center, part of the Coast Transit Authority, at 820 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
Hopefully, plans for passenger train service will continue to push forward and become operational this year.
If so, it will be the first time passenger train service has been available on the Gulf Coast since before Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
The proposed schedule includes two trains going each way—from Mobile to New Orleans and vice versa—every day.
